Wellington's matcha scene fits into a few walkable blocks of Te Aro. Pour and Twist has been hand-whisking matcha since it opened in 2017. Evil Twins, run by twin sisters, developed its own vanilla-infused matcha blend in Kyoto. West Two Espresso is the place for colourful flavoured matcha, Creamy and Crunchy serves Korean matcha, and Swimsuit pours New Zealand-imported Thea matcha. All five appear in the city's own 2026 matcha guide and are verified open as of October 2026.
A small manual brew bar on Garrett Street that has served matcha since it opened in 2017. Every matcha is hand-whisked to order, using Japanese ceremonial and premium matcha from Thea Matcha. Beyond the classic latte there is a pink matcha and other seasonal variations. Open 9am to 2pm, closed Tuesdays.
A colourful café and streetwear spot run by Wellington twins Stephanie and Natalie Chin, who travelled to Kyoto to develop their own vanilla-infused matcha blend, the Evil Blend. The fan favourite is the Matcha Love: ceremonial matcha with milk or oat milk and a vanilla shot. You can buy the Evil Blend to make at home.
A café on the corner of Taranaki and Jessie Streets, known for colourful matcha drinks. The owner's recommendation is the banana bread matcha, and blueberry, white chocolate and iced strawberry matcha are regulars too. It is one of the best-rated cafés in the city on review sites, and opens every day.
A small café on Webb Street serving earthy Korean matcha alongside ceremonial-grade matcha and matcha lattes. It opens early, from around 6am, and is closed on Sundays. A good choice if you want to compare Korean matcha with the Japanese matcha elsewhere on this list.
A Dixon Street café that stocks Thea Matcha, premium Japanese matcha imported by two New Zealand cousins, alongside Coffee Supreme coffee. The creamy, maple-sweetened iced matcha is the one to order. Swimsuit also has cafés on Lombard Street and in Miramar.
