Tainan is better known for milkfish and temple snacks, but the old capital has quietly built one of Taiwan's most serious matcha scenes. Most of it sits in the Central and West District, in renovated old houses and lanes near Chihkan Tower, where shops whisk Uji matcha to order and turn it into mille-feuille, parfaits and floats. Local blogger Jeremy's long-running Tainan matcha roundup, updated for 2026, is the best map of the scene, and we cross-checked every address against at least two other sources. All five below are verified open as of October 2026.
Born on Yumin Street in 2021, Chimori Seika moved into a Japanese-era house on Xinmei Street and is now one of the city's best-known matcha dessert stops. Blog coverage says it uses Marukyu Koyamaen matcha and that the matcha mille-feuille is dine-in only. A March 2026 UDN piece covered its seasonal strawberry parfait and a new matcha float latte. Expect a queue: sources say there are no reservations.
A small Japanese-style corner shop on Fuzhong Street, Midori Matcha (綠町抹茶專門店) has been a fixture of Tainan matcha lists for years and is still on Jeremy's 2026 roundup. Bloggers say it uses Marukyu Koyamaen matcha, and the menu runs from matcha mille crepe cake and roll cake to tiramisu, parfait and a straight matcha drink. Seating is limited and several reviewers say it fills up, so go early. It closes on Tuesdays.
BAN TE (万茶川) is a Japanese tea bar beside a temple courtyard on Fuqian Road, on the site of the earlier Chatori tea shop. Reviewers stress that every drink is whisked to order with Ippodo matcha from Kyoto, and several note prices are on the high side for a takeaway drink. Travel site Yam recommends the house matcha latte, and other blogs point to the genmaicha matcha latte. It appears on the 2026 Tainan matcha roundup.
Usaku Chaya (宇作茶屋) is a Japanese tea house near Chihkan Tower with bar seats and a tatami area. Bloggers say drinks are whisked to order and that it works with organic Uji matcha, sencha, genmaicha and hojicha. The 2026 roundup names its matcha affogato and matcha soufflé pancakes, and other reviews mention a matcha float latte. Sources say there is no booking, with a table limit when full, and that it closes on Tuesdays.
Sputnik Lab (衛屋茶事) hides down a lane near Tainan Station in a 1920s Japanese wooden house with a garden and tatami rooms. Shoes come off, sources say there is a one-item minimum and no children under 10, and booking a day ahead is recommended. The 2026 roundup recommends its matcha uji kintoki shaved ice and matcha milk. It is more tea room than café, and one of the calmest places to drink matcha in the city.
