A bowl of matcha is mostly water, so the water you use shapes the taste. Chlorine and other off-flavours in tap water carry straight into the cup, and very hard water can dull green tea's sweetness. Countertop reverse osmosis (RO) filters are the most thorough filters you can use without plumbing: you fill a tank with tap water and they filter it on the counter. This guide compares five, and notes which add minerals back, since completely stripped water can taste flat.
On a budget? A simple carbon pitcher filter removes chlorine taste, which is the biggest single improvement for most tap water. RO goes further, at a higher price.

The listing says it is certified by IAMPO to NSF standards to reduce 84 contaminants, including chlorine, lead, fluoride and PFOA/PFOS, through a patented 4-stage RO system, with a mineral boost stage. It needs no plumbing: plug it in and fill the 1-gallon tank.
A smaller AquaTru that filters into a glass carafe, with the same 4-stage RO and mineral boost approach. The listing gives filter lives of 6 months for the pre/carbon filter and a year for the RO filter, and specifically mentions tea and coffee among its uses.
A 5-stage system that includes a remineralization filter, according to the listing, with filters that last 12 to 24 months and a display that shows remaining filter life.
The listing says it filters 99.9% of possible contaminants, including PFOA, PFOS, chlorine and fluoride, with a 3:1 pure-to-drain ratio, a TDS display and two autofill pitchers. Sold and shipped by Amazon.com.
The listing says its mineral filter adds calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium back to avoid the flat taste of RO water, and an autofill glass pitcher fills itself from the 108 oz tank.
What water is best for matcha?
Fresh, filtered, fairly soft water, without chlorine taste. Green tea is generally brewed with soft water in Japan, which lets its sweetness and umami come through. Fully demineralised water can taste flat, which is why several RO systems here add minerals back. Heat it to 70–80°C, not boiling; see best matcha kettle.
Running costs
Countertop RO systems need replacement filters every 6 to 24 months depending on the model and your water. Check the price of replacement filters before you buy; over a few years they can cost as much as the unit.

Frequently asked questions
Does water quality affect matcha?
Yes. Matcha is mostly water, so chlorine, off-flavours and very hard water all affect the taste. Filtered, fairly soft water lets matcha's sweetness come through.
Is reverse osmosis water good for tea?
It removes off-flavours well, but fully demineralised water can taste flat. RO systems that add minerals back give a more balanced cup.
Do I need plumbing for a countertop RO filter?
No. The filters in this guide sit on the counter: you fill a tank with tap water and plug them in.
